Training a dog is a multi year process with a high rate of failure. Training your own dog is a massive commitment and if you’ve never done serious dog training, I do not recommend it without substantial supports in place with heavy direct guidance from an experienced service dog trainer. Many states give rights to handlers for service dogs in training that result in analogous access to the ADA, but you need to check the specifics of your state laws. Just be aware of what the ADA requires for service dog behavior if you’re going to bring them in public and that both the ADA and ACAA only cover service dogs, not service dogs in training. For my disabilities and needs, there aren’t really reputable programs I have access to. Once upon a time before my body gave up on functional life totally, I was a dog trainer. There are other non-narcolepsy tasks she is trained to do, and my life is so much better because of her. I’m horrific at remembering to take my meds, even with an alarm (go go adhd getting distracted), so she is trained to badger me until I take the meds when my alarm goes off. and if it is bad enough because I’m fighting it she’ll make me go sit down. With some of my more mild episodes where I’m wobbly she’ll walk against me to help me stop walking like a drunkard (which without her usually results in me tripping and hurting myself, running into things and hurting myself, or tripping and falling which is super fun when I have reduced muscle control). When I have a bad episode of cataplexy, she comes over and can help nudge me in a better position (I have a habit of ending up in a crumpled heap with my head at a weird angle) and lay her body on mine to help me relax and calm down to neutral more quickly. I have a service dog that helps with my narcolepsy (she is trained to help with other disabilities as well, but there is largely task overlap). You cannot bring them to non-pet friendly public places or on flights. They are permitted in housing that is otherwise not pet friendly only (FHA). These animals, frequently dogs or cats, help people by their existence and do not need to be trained to do anything specific. A service dog can accompany you in places of public accommodation (ADA), most rented housing (FHA), or on planes (ACAA). A task or work must be trained and cannot be something the dog just inherently does on their own. If you’re talking the US, a service dog must be task trained to mitigate your disability. Narcolepsy Fact Sheet: National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS).You should try to maintain a structured sleep schedule, which can include napping during the day if required. Currently there is no cure for Narcolepsy, but the symptoms of narcolepsy are controllable with medication. These tests help doctors rule out signs and symptoms that could be linked to similar other sleep disorders. The following are used in determining a diagnosis of narcolepsy: This testing often takes place overnight at a sleep clinic, under the watch of professional medical staff. If symptoms of narcolepsy are visible, provide evidence & ask your doctor to refer you for further testing with a specialist. " Toxins may include heavy metals, pesticides and weed killers, and secondhand smoke." Some research suggests that environmental toxins may also trigger narcolepsy. It is thought that a combination of the following factors cause low levels of hypocretin: What causes low hypocretin levels isn't well understood. This is a chemical in the brain that helps promote wakefulness. Most people who have narcolepsy have low levels of hypocretin. Narcoleptics suffer from the inability to remain awake during the day and to stay asleep through the night. The name is from the ancient Greek narco- ( to put to sleep) & -lepsis ( to have a seizure). Narcolepsy is a chronic neurological sleep disorder that affects the brain's ability to regulate sleep-wake cycles.Sleep Study or Polysomnogram, What to Expect & How to Prepare Your question may have already been answered.
